The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year, but let’s not forget about the all-important Half Time show! Over the years, some of the world’s HUGEST stars have taken the stage and let’s be real — people are left talking about these performances WAY longer than they actually talk about the outcome of the game.
Speaking of, on Sunday February 2 the world will be watching as the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with a Half Time performance from Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers. While we have no doubt that will definitely go down as one of the best in history, we picked eight other Half Time shows, and ranked them in terms of excellence.
So without further ado, scroll below to see some of the best Super Bowl Half Time performances EVER!
8. New Kids on the Block (1991)
These guys were the One Direction of their day. Joined by a number of Disney characters (since this Super Bowl was held in Orlando) this Half Time performance was certainly memorable, but not one of the best ever.
7. Shaina Twain and No Doubt (2003)
What do you get when you put together this country queen and one of rock’s biggest groups? A pretty good Super Bowl half time show. This just reminds us how awesome Gwen Stefani is — def felt the girl power this year!
6. Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, and Justin Timberlake (2004)
What a line up this was! And what should have went down as one of the best half time performances in Super Bowl history was completely overshadowed by Janet’s wardrobe malfunction. The world basically went crazy after this happened, and they decided to pick more “tame” performers for several years after this incident went down. In fact, Janet’s career hasn’t really been the same since.
5. Black Eyed Peas and Usher (2011)
Starting off with their hit song “I Gotta Feeling” they definitely brought a fun energy to the show complete with weird futuristic dancers. Bringing in Usher was a nice touch too.
4. Michael Jackson (1993)
This was just one of many performances that proved Michael was the KING of pop.
3. Beyonce — with a cameo by Destiny’s Child (2013)
Beyonce abolsutley SLAYED this performance. Everything about it was just so good. We don’t even know where to begin. In fact her performance was so good, the power went out after she performed! OK, maybe the power outage had nothing to do with her, but still. She knows how to bring it, that’s for sure.
2. Madonna (2012)
Madonna, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., LMFAO, Cee-Lo Green…there’s a reason people referred to this Super Bowl as “Madonna Bowl.”
1. Britney Spears/*NSYNC/Nelly/Mary J. Blige/Aerosmith (2001)
It pretty much goes without saying that this Super Bowl half time performance is basically the best of all time. It had a little something for everyone — pop, rock, rap. Also, Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler did a funny little bit with everyone before the performance aired. Will this ever be topped? We think not.
