When it comes to pop music, you might be surprise by some of the people writing music. Even superstars like Taylor Swift — who is notorious for penning her own lyrics — needs some help every now and then. Enter songwriters — the people behind the music.

That’s right, there are tons of people out there writing catchy pop tunes, and some of which you might be surprised about. For instance, there’s a Swedish producer named Max Martin who is responsible for pretty much every pop song since the 90′s. He’s written for *NYSNC, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys — you name it. Also, let’s not forget about Ester Dean — aka Cynthia from Pitch Perfect — who wrote Rihanna‘s “S & M” which they sang in the movie!

We’ve rounded up five of the most influential (and surprising) pop songwriters basically ever, so check them out below!
