Modern Family is undoubtedly one of the biggest shows on television of all time. It’s been on air since 2009 and got picked up for a ninth AND tenth season just this year. We pretty much watched the Dunphy kids grow up both on TV and IRL over the years. We’ve gotten attached to following along with their personal lives and actually felt like WE were the ones going through a breakup Sarah Hyland and Dom Sherwood called it quits. The group of actors who make up the fictional family may not actually be related, but they act like one both on and off set.
Having said this, we need to tell you something — the crew was almost made up of an entire different crew. Ty Burrell, the actor who plays Phil, originally passed on playing the adorable father figure because he was getting ready to quit acting. He was 41 when he was offered the role, his wife had already left Hollywood and they were thinking about starting a family. Thankfully, the now-50-year-old had a change of heart and decided to take the role that changed his life. The hilarious Julie Brown was originally not even considered for Claire because she was pregnant with twins at the time.
But it doesn’t end there! Although Jesse Tyler Ferguson brings Mitch Pritchett to life every week, he was originally asked to audition for his TV husband, Cameron Tucker. But you know what they say — what’s meant to be will always be, and while these leads almost didn’t get their life-changing parts, there were TONS of celebs who almost did! Check out the gallery below to see who was considered for roles on Modern Family and see if you could imagine the show with them instead!
