If you’re anything like us, you’ve waited all year long for the MTV Video Music Awards to come around again because, LBR, they seldom disappoint. It seems like almost every year, something shocking happens that we wind up talking about for days, months or even years to come — and after 12 long months of waiting, the VMAs will make their return again TONIGHT!
In anticipation of all the performances, wins and, yes, DRAMA that’s going to go down this evening, we think it’s v important to pay homage to the craziest moments that have ever happened at the awards show. And trust us… there have been a lot. Ready for a look back at some of the ones that we can’t seem to shake from our memory? Check it out:
When Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus.
After "Anaconda" didn't receive a nomination for Video of the Year in 2015, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to shade the industry for only nominating videos that "celebrate women with very thin bodies." To many, it also seemed like she was shading Taylor Swift, since Tay's video for "Bad Blood" was nominated and featured several of her supermodel besties.
This incident definitely caused some major beef between Nicki and Tay, but it also started an issue between Nicki and Miley Cyrus, too!
After Miley saw all the Twitter drama go down between Nicki and Taylor, she told The New York Times, "What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind."
Once Nicki found out what Miley said, she was NOT happy, which is why she lashed out at her live on the VMA stage while accepting an award. "Miley, what's good?" WOW.
When Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj ended their feud with a performance on the VMA stage.
After the aforementioned Twitter beef between Taylor and Nicki, almost nothing was quite as shocking as when they decided to reunite and resolve their issues live on the VMA stage.
That's right! The pop princess and the badass female rapper joined forces in 2015 for an epic performance of "The Night is Still Young" and "Bad Blood," and we'll never forget this power move. NGL, we're still watching this performance on a loop because these ladies are such QUEENS!
When Lady Gaga wore a dress made out of meat.

Lady Gaga is known to test the waters when it comes to her fashion, but nothing shocked fans more than when she showed up to the 2010 VMAs wearing a dress made completely out of meat. We mean... what was she thinking?!
NGL, we always expect some beef at the VMAs, but NOT this kind! To this day, this fashion statement remains the boldest that Gaga's ever followed through with, and remember... she showed up to the Grammys inside an egg once.
When Beyoncé revealed her pregnancy.
These days, celebrities are obsessed with announcing their pregnancies on social media, but Beyoncé kicked it up a notch (as she always does) when she announced that she was expecting immediately after her performance of "Love on Top" at the 2011 VMAs.
After slaying us with her incredible vocals, Bey dropped the mic, unbuttoned her sparkly blazer and revealed an adorable baby bump underneath. Sorry, and we're gonna let you finish, but this was the best pregnancy announcement of all time!
When Kanye West rudely interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech
...which brings us to the cringe-worthy moment that Kanye West dissed TF out of Taylor Swift.
When Taylor was summoned up onto the stage to accept the award for Best Female Video for "You Belong with Me," she was rudely interrupted by Kanye, who stormed the stage, grabbed the mic and insisted that she didn't deserve it.
Kanye said, "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time." When the camera panned to Beyoncé, she was clearly mortified, but like the queen she is, she invited Tay back on stage later in the show to have her moment. We stan women supporting other women!
When Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke made us all kinds of uncomfortable.
When it comes to shocking VMA moments, one of the first that comes to mind is Miley and Robin Thicke's performance of "Blurred Lines" at the 2013 show, and that's because it was disturbing in SO many ways. Not only is the song itself problematic AF, but the performance crossed way too many lines — to the point where viewers everywhere were made to feel extremely uncomfortable.
Despite the backlash that they received online, it's clear that both Miley and Robin succeeded in their goal. We mean... to this day, we're still talking about it! Sure, it'll go down as one of the most memorable VMA performances in history, but not necessarily in a good way!
When Diana Ross jiggled Lil Kim's boob.
As soon as Lil Kim stepped foot on the red carpet in her boob-baring purple out, people were chit-chatting away about her interesting outfit choice. However, it wasn't until later in the show that things got, well... weird.
When Lil Kim and Mary J. Blige presented an award to music legend Diana Ross, Diana couldn't help but give Lil Kim's stray boob a little jiggle. Clearly, this moment was awkward AF, but it still goes down in history as one of the craziest VMA moments to EVER happen.
When Madonna made out with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Another VMA moment that people can't seem to forget is when Madonna locked lips with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The smooches happened during their performance of "Hollywood," and no one could believe their eyes... especially Brit's ex, Justin Timberlake.
Unfortunately for Christina, after Britney and Madonna's smooch, the camera cut to capture JT's reaction, so Xtina's kiss was completely overshadowed. In other words, the next day, Madonna and Britney's makeout sesh made the news, and Christina's kiss, well... people sort of even forget it ever happened.
When Britney Spears performed with a python.
Britney Spears' makeout sesh with Madonna isn't the only thing that landed her on this list, though! If you remember (which, how could you NOT?), in 2001, Britney graced the stage for her performance of "I'm a Slave 4 U" with an actual python, and we were FREAKING out!
Not only was there no real purpose of the snake, but the stunt appeared to be dangerous AF. Ultimately, though, the purpose was to get people talking, and 17 years later, we still can't believe this actually happened. ICONIC.
When Lady Gaga delivered a very dark performance of "Paparazzi."
When Lady Gaga took the VMA stage in 2009 for a performance of "Paparazzi," it was super dark and twisted. The performance was supposed to show what could happen to celebrities if their privacy is constantly being invaded, and it did just that.
The performance ended with Gaga covered in blood and hanging from a noose, which was supposed to be an artistic way of showing people the grave effects that extreme fame can have on celebrities. While it was definitely a reminder of the devastation fame could cause, we weren't prepared for such the performance to take such a grim and disturbing twist.
